Ironing, linen and textiles in Voorburg
Voorburg lived for centuries on the Vliet, the towing canal between The Hague and Leiden. Along that side of the water, Hague regents built country estates — Constantijn Huygens's Hofwijck (1642) is the most famous, but there were dozens more along the Vliet. In those houses the household revolved around great chests of linen: tablecloths, napkins, pillowslips, cushion covers, sheets of smooth damask. Every few weeks everything was brought out together, rinsed in the Vliet water, and ironed by maids who had been trained in the work.
Huygens himself wrote in his Hofwijck poem of the peace of his country house — and remarked, almost without thinking, that he received his most clever ideas while his ironing maids were at work a room away. The connection between unhurried writing and neatly ironed linen was self-evident for someone of his standing.
After the eighteenth century the country estates were parcelled out, but the taste remained. In the twentieth century Voorburg became a refined commuter municipality, with villas on the Maerten Trompstraat, Park Leeuwenbergh and Essesteijn. With that comes — still today — a wardrobe of well-kept blouses, starched table linen and proper shirts. The time to keep them in order yourself has only dwindled in recent decades.
