Ironing, linen and textiles in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel
Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel is a dyke village which for centuries shared the polder economy of the Krimpenerwaard and the Zuidplas. The village lies at the lowest point of the Netherlands — 6.76 metres below NAP, officially established — and that is no coincidence: the whole surrounding area is reclaimed peatland, where peat-mills once turned and where the farmsteads sat on narrow polder plots.
The clothing culture that goes with such a polder village is sternly Reformed. Well into the twentieth century, all of Nieuwerkerk made its way on Sunday morning towards the Dorpsstraat — long black skirt for the women, starched white dress for the children on feast days, dark suit and immaculate shirt for the men. The quality of the starch was scrutinised in the corridors of the church, and a faded collar was reason for whispered comment.
Nieuwerkerk now lies within the municipality of Zuidplas, together with Moordrecht, Moerkapelle and Zevenhuizen. There is plenty of new-build development in Esse Zoom, and Park Hitland on the Hollandse IJssel is a popular recreation area. Younger families, many Rotterdam commuters, but the inclination to wear neatly kept clothes has not disappeared.
Since 2013 we have been driving from our laundry on the Henricuskade through Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel on fixed mornings. Your laundry bag goes with us in the morning, and it comes back the same day or on the agreed day, clean, ironed and folded, with the same driver.
How does Strijkservice Haaglanden work in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel?
For residents of Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel our service works exactly as in the rest of Haaglanden: on a fixed day of the week our driver comes by, picks up your laundry bag and brings your laundry back clean and crisply ironed. No appointment needed — your routine is set.
You get one regular driver and a fixed pickup rhythm so you always know what to expect. No carrying, no full drying racks in the living room, no evenings at the ironing board.
Everything is handled in our own laundry on Henricuskade in The Hague. Shirts, blouses, table linen, bed and bath textiles — we iron it the way it should go back into the cupboard at home, neatly folded and ready to use.
