Ironing, linen and textiles in Zoeterwoude
Zoeterwoude is a small but extensive polder municipality on the Oude Rijn, with two village cores (Zoeterwoude-Dorp and Zoeterwoude-Rijndijk) which functioned independently of each other for centuries. Until well into the nineteenth century, the village lived from cattle-rearing on the polders and from grain trade along the Rhine — Zoeterwoude barges carried grain, hay and straw to Leiden and Rotterdam.
In 1975 something radically new arrived: Heineken opened its largest brewery in Zoeterwoude-Zuid, at that time the largest brewery in Europe. The brewery brought not only employment but also a brand-new work-clothes culture to the village. The Heineken brewer wore a specific outfit — light-blue poplin, with company logo, starched collar — that from then on was treated on a large scale in specialised laundries. For many Zoeterwoude families the household shifted from a Sunday-shirt focus to a combination of company clothing and office shirts.
Zoeterwoude is still rural, with many farms, the Heineken brewery, and a few smaller residential districts in the two village cores. Many residents work at Heineken, in Leiden, or commute to The Hague.
Since 2013 we have been driving from our laundry on the Henricuskade through Zoeterwoude on fixed mornings. We collect your laundry, iron everything, and bring it back neatly with the same driver — every week.
How does Strijkservice Haaglanden work in Zoeterwoude?
For residents of Zoeterwoude our service works exactly as in the rest of Haaglanden: on a fixed day of the week our driver comes by, picks up your laundry bag and brings your laundry back clean and crisply ironed. No appointment needed — your routine is set.
You get one regular driver and a fixed pickup rhythm so you always know what to expect. No carrying, no full drying racks in the living room, no evenings at the ironing board.
Everything is handled in our own laundry on Henricuskade in The Hague. Shirts, blouses, table linen, bed and bath textiles — we iron it the way it should go back into the cupboard at home, neatly folded and ready to use.
