Ironing, linen and textiles in Zevenhuizen
Zevenhuizen owes its name to the seven farmhouses that stood on a narrow peat ridge along the Rotte, when the surrounding polders were still lakes. After the draining of the Zuidplaspolder in 1840 — one of the largest land-reclamation operations in the Netherlands — the village ended up perched on the rim of one of the deepest polders in the country. It had a typical small farming community: dairy farmers, a few arable farmers, a village ironer and a village tailor.
The village ironer in Zevenhuizen had a regular round of customers among the farms. Every Monday her clients brought her their Sunday shirts — white cotton, high collar, starched cuffs — and within two days everything came back, perfectly smooth, pleated according to the pattern prescribed by the family. The farmsteads along the Rottekade, on the Wollefoppenweg and on the Noordeinde each had their own little ritual around ironing day.
Zevenhuizen is now part of the municipality of Zuidplas, together with Moerkapelle, Moordrecht and Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel. The village still has its old core and a number of modern extensions; many of its residents commute to Rotterdam or Gouda.
Since 2013 we have been driving from our laundry on the Henricuskade through Zevenhuizen on fixed mornings. Laundry bag collected, washed, ironed, returned — same driver, same day.
