Ironing, linen and textiles in Wassenaar
Wassenaar has always been a village of country estates and great houses. De Paauw, Huys ten Bosch (which lies closer to The Hague), Duinrell, Persijn — each a country seat with its own household and its own linen rooms. An estate kitchen ran on rolling cabinets full of table linen for grand dinners, starched napkins by the dozen, and linen sorted by the age and function of the staff. In the nineteenth century, household ledgers still circulated here recording, day by day, which ironing maid was to treat which piece of linen at which temperature.
Wassenaar's chic also showed in the streetscape. Around 1920, the Raadhuisplein and the Langstraat were the stage for fashionable dress: ladies in flowered hats and perfectly smooth gowns, gentlemen in woollen three-piece suits and starched collars. Riding, tennis, the concours hippique: three sports that demand impeccable linen and riding attire. And riding clothes — tweed, linen breeches — call for more careful upkeep than almost any other textile.
That kind of household lives on. Wassenaar is a municipality of spacious homes, expats, ambassadors and families who want to live in proper attire without giving up an evening to it. The wardrobe demands maintenance — only no longer in one's own hands.
Since 2013 we have been driving out from our laundry on the Henricuskade on fixed mornings through Wassenaar. We collect the laundry bag, wash and iron everything down to the fold you are used to, and deliver it back on the agreed day. Always the same delivery driver, always the same time.
How does Strijkservice Haaglanden work in Wassenaar?
For residents of Wassenaar our service works exactly as in the rest of Haaglanden: on a fixed day of the week our driver comes by, picks up your laundry bag and brings your laundry back clean and crisply ironed. No appointment needed — your routine is set.
You get one regular driver and a fixed pickup rhythm so you always know what to expect. No carrying, no full drying racks in the living room, no evenings at the ironing board.
Everything is handled in our own laundry on Henricuskade in The Hague. Shirts, blouses, table linen, bed and bath textiles — we iron it the way it should go back into the cupboard at home, neatly folded and ready to use.
