Waddinxveen is an industrial municipality along the Gouwe. In the nineteenth century, furniture factories, sawmills, pantile works and a number of flour mills were located here. The furniture factories (Van Putten, Blom, Schotvanger) dominated employment well into the twentieth century — along the Kerkweg and Noordkade stood factory halls where wood-workers in grey work smocks stood planing and lacquering under bright lamps.
The households of those furniture-makers had a double laundry: one for the work clothes (grey smocks shot through with wood dust, only to be made white again with strong soap and hot water) and one for the Sunday shirt. That shirt, in Waddinxveen, was traditionally ironed very tight, with a raised collar that bowed slightly forward — a local ironing style not so often seen in the neighbouring villages. Waddinxveen ironers shaped the collar that way using a specific wooden form-block.
The furniture industry has largely gone; Waddinxveen is now a modern commuter municipality, with the Triangel as its big new-build district, Zuidplashof and a centre around the Passage. Many dual-income families, many office work clothes.
