Ironing, linen and textiles in Rotterdam
Rotterdam was the port city par excellence, and a port city runs on uniforms. From the early nineteenth century onwards, ship-owners gathered here, with one name everybody knew: the Holland-Amerika Lijn, founded in 1873 on the Wilhelminakade. The HAL ran the Atlantic crossing for emigrants and well-to-do passengers alike, and every crew member — from captain to stowing hand, kitchen aide, stewardess and salon musician — wore a strictly prescribed uniform. White cotton for the stewards, dark blue for the officers, striped for the cook, ironed shirts for every class.
Ashore, an entire city district lived off maintaining those uniforms. On Katendrecht, in Oud-Charlois and around the Kralingse Veer were laundries, ironing shops and pressing rooms that turned the ships' uniforms around at high speed. A passenger ship arriving on a Friday had to depart again on Monday with clean, crisply ironed linen — which gave a weekend of feverish work in hundreds of small Rotterdam ironing shops.
The HAL moved to Seattle in the 1960s, but Rotterdam remained a city of work clothes, uniforms and office shirts — from Erasmus University to Maersk to the office towers in Feyenoord City. The pace has not slackened.
Since 2013 we have been driving from our laundry on the Henricuskade through parts of Rotterdam on fixed mornings. We collect your laundry, iron everything smooth, and deliver it back on the agreed day, with the same delivery driver — just as the HAL stewards always preferred.
