Poeldijk is small, but the grape-growing history of the Westland begins here. In 1850 the gardener Marinus Kester built the first wall greenhouse in the Netherlands on his plot on the Monsterseweg — a simple, south-facing glass house against a brick wall — and in it he ripened the Black Alicante grape under Dutch weather conditions. That Poeldijk experiment laid the foundation for the entire Westland greenhouse landscape. Without Kester's wall greenhouse, no glasshouse cluster would ever have arisen.
The generations after Kester lived in Poeldijk around the imposing, almost too large Sint-Bartholomeus church — a neo-Gothic village church where everyone turned out neatly on Sundays. The market-gardening households had simple but carefully maintained church clothing: laundered collar, smoothly ironed neck, well-brushed shirts. The ironing board stood ready in the corner of the kitchen on Saturday evening.
Poeldijk is now a small village within the municipality of Westland, with a few modern new-build districts and many market-gardening businesses around it. The Sint-Bartholomeus still stands, the grape is still cultivated — albeit in tiny quantities — and the appreciation for neatness in clothing has not vanished.
