Ironing, linen and textiles in Naaldwijk
Naaldwijk is the historical capital of the Westland, and with that the town of the blue smock. The Westland market gardener's smock — a roomy cotton or linen working shirt worn over an ordinary blouse, in that characteristic dark blue with white piping — was the standard dress, from the nineteenth century to well into the twentieth, of anyone working outdoors on the market garden's grounds. Grape growers, flower growers, cucumber growers: they all wore it. A smock was washed hard and bravely, mangled every fortnight, and on Sunday tucked away in the wardrobe with a sprig of lavender.
But Sunday in Naaldwijk was something else. Then the people of the Westland, in their finest black — the gardeners wore a heavily starched collar, polished shoes, and a perfectly straight overcoat — stepped into the Grote Kerk or the Sint-Adrianus Church. The transition from weekday smock to Sunday morning coat was a daily reminder of a double identity: field worker and village notable in one.
Greenhouse horticulture has since grown into a global cluster around Naaldwijk. The smock has gone; today's working clothes are technical, stretchy, and often carry a company name. But the relentless week-after-week wash remains, and the Sunday shirt has become a shirt for Friday evening in the town centre.
