Ironing, linen and textiles in Maasland
Maasland is an old flax village. In Midden-Delfland, much flax was cultivated until well into the twentieth century — the long, slim, almost blue-green plant from which, after a months-long process, linen is finally spun. Farmers on the polders around Maasland pulled the flax out of the ground roots and all, let it ripen in sheaves, retted it in the ditch, scutched the woody parts away, and sold the 'flax bands' on to dealers who took them to the weaving works in Twente, Brabant or Flanders.
The accompanying village culture was strict and Reformed. Maasland had several churches and a sense of neatness that was visible in the clothing: long, straight-cut Sunday dresses for the women, high white collars for the men, with a starch you boiled up at home from wheat flour in hot water. A starched collar, in Maasland on feast days, was so stiff that it literally rested on the shoulders without a fold.
Maasland is now a green ribbon village in Midden-Delfland, with 's-Herenstraat as its core, several modern extensions, and still many livestock farms in the polders around it. The distinction between working clothes and Sunday clothes has become more fluid, but the need for a smart shirt has not.
Since 2013 we have been driving out from our laundry on the Henricuskade on fixed mornings through Maasland. We collect your laundry bag, iron everything, and deliver it back with the same delivery driver.
