Ironing, linen and textiles in Kwintsheul
Kwintsheul is the smallest core village of the Westland, and a typical hamlet-along-the-canal. It owes its name to the old 'Heul' — a small stone bridge or culvert where the Gantelvaart ran through the land. Around that heul sat smiths, basket weavers, shoemakers and a local ironer-at-home: someone with whom you would leave your collar and your shirt on a Monday morning, and whom you could come back to on a Wednesday evening to collect them.
That kind of small artisanal household help was common throughout the Westland's ribbon settlements. In the 1930s Kwintsheul still had at least two independent ironers, each with her own small business and each with her own speciality — one was known for collars and cuffs, the other for Sunday dresses and funeral linens. That was no great industry; it was a village taking care of itself.
Kwintsheul is now a compact village with many market-gardening businesses and modern residential districts. Many residents work elsewhere in the Westland horticulture or commute to The Hague or Delft. The time for half a day's ironing has gone; the appreciation for a good shirt has not.
Since 2013 we have been driving out from our laundry on the Henricuskade on fixed mornings through Kwintsheul. We collect your laundry, iron everything, and bring it back with the same delivery driver — the same day, every week.
