Ironing, linen and textiles in Bergschenhoek
Bergschenhoek is a former polder village on the edge of the Rotte, where peat was cut for Rotterdam in the seventeenth century. After the land was drained, it became a village of small farmers and, from the nineteenth century onwards, of greenhouse horticulture. The typical Bergschenhoek grower worked a glasshouse of no more than half a hectare — a family business — and his wife helped with sorting, packing and looking after the work clothes.
Those work clothes consisted of coarse cotton smocks, woollen trousers and, in the winter months, padded jackets. But the Sunday shirt of such a Bergschenhoek grower was something else: thinly woven white linen or cotton, stiff as cardboard after a round of starch, and pressed taut with a heavy flatiron. The grower who appeared on the village square in a poorly ironed shirt would hear about it from his own mother.
Bergschenhoek is now part of the municipality of Lansingerland, with a modern village centre, large new-build districts such as Parkzoom and De Parel, and greenhouse horticulture in the surrounding polders. Younger families dominate, with many commuters towards Rotterdam and Zoetermeer.
